The Legal Resources Foundation joins the rest of the World in commemorating the International Human Rights Day. This year, International Human Rights Day marks the beginning of a year-long campaign in recognition of the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights under the theme “#StandUp4HumanRights”.

The theme resonates well with the LRF’s mandate of promoting human rights and access to justice through providing legal assistance to those whose rights are infringed as well as empowering communities and individuals to assert their rights.

The LRF therefore calls upon the new government to StandUp4HumanRights by complying with all its human rights commitments – under the national regional and international instruments.

Specifically the LRF urges the government to:

• Respect and protect all fundamental freedoms, particularly freedom of association, assembly and expression before, during and after the elections.
• Abolish corporal punishment as a form of punishment imposed by courts on juvenile offenders and administered in the home and at school as a form of discipline.
• Create an environment which allows CSOs and other institutions to raise awareness on human rights in communities without fear of being victimised.
• Provide adequate resources to the government department mandated with the provision of legal aid, to enable them to provide holistic legal aid to the indigent.
